The economy is on the threshold of the fourth industrial revolution. In order to remain internationally competitive, the manufacturing industry has to face new requirements. Products have to be produced in more and more variants. Quantities for individual variants are being reduced - to the point of customers explicitly requesting mass production of products with batch size 1. Nevertheless, production costs must be kept low if a company wants to survive in international markets.
BaSys4.0 is intended to support the efficient conversion of a production process as an "operating system" for manufacturing plants. To ensure process planning and conversion in real time, a holistic process image must be provided that transfers all data via a common interface. For this purpose, all services and data of the process must be available in a uniform format that can be extended by further services and data at any time. With the help of the "operating system" BaSys4.0, manufacturing processes can be quickly adapted when a new product appears, so that all supplier parts are also available automatically and on time.
Dr. Thomas Kuhn, Head of Department Embedded Software Engineering at Fraunhofer IESE, comments: "The decreasing risk for new products also creates opportunities for smaller, very innovative companies. Consumers will benefit from new products for which there would have been no market with traditional manufacturing and the associated high prices."
BaSys 4.0 is a collaborative project involving a total of 15 partners. The project partners represent a broad spectrum of companies as well as university and non-university research institutions.
