SYSGO's embedded Linux ELinOS available in Version 7.2
The biggest new feature is the initial support for RISC-V, which has become increasingly established in recent years as a royalty-free and therefore cost-effective alternative to ARM-based platforms. This includes a Cross Development Kit (CDK) with associated debugging tools. The first board to be officially supported is Microchip's PolarFire SoC Icicle. Version 7.2 of ELinOS also fixes the year 2038 bug for all architectures. This ensures the smooth operation of embedded systems based on ELinOS beyond the year 2038.
As the topic of Software Bill of Materials (SBOM) continues to gain momentum, the license tools in ELinOS have been updated so that all licenses are now output in SPDX format. This makes it easier to analyze the licenses used within a project. There are also improvements in the interaction with the real-time operating system and hypervisor PikeOS and Immutable OS support has been expanded. It is now even easier to create an immutable project using the Eclipse-based integrated development environment (IDE) CODEO. A specially created wizard supports the setup. Immutable systems simplify version management and offer security advantages. Further security hardening mechanisms have been added, such as support for Intel's Control Flow Enforcement Technology (CET). ELinOS 7.2 also comes with toolchain updates: The GNU Compiler Collection (GCC) is supported in version 12.2, binutils in version 2.40. This makes the current version ready for the future, also concerning upcoming legislative requirements, such as those stipulated by the Cyber Resilience Act (CRA).
"ELinOS 7.2 is clearly aimed at an operationally secure future. With this version, we are taking a step into the next decade and overcoming foreseeable hurdles so that our customers can continue to rely on a secure base system for their applications in the future," says David Engraf, Head of Product Development Embedded Linux ELinOS at SYSGO.
